PM National Health Insurance Scheme May Cost Over Rs 8000 Crore

The upcoming mega health insurance scheme termed as “Prime Minister National Health Insurance Scheme” may generate a premium of over Rs. 8000 Crore for the insurance companies. Under the new proposed scheme, the health ministry would require a financial support from 4000 to 5000 crores in order to pay the premium.

Under the current Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), BPL families are covered for an insurance of up to Rs. 30000 which will be phased out one the new scheme is launched. Under the RSBY scheme, there were about 1.18 crore hospitalizations till the end of last financial year.

Under the new PM National Health Insurance Scheme, the central government would pay 60% of the premium amount while the rest would be paid by the state governments. At present, under the RSBY, state governments pay only 25% of the premium amount while 75% is paid by the central government.

The guidelines for the operations and implementation of PM national health insurance scheme is being prepared by the health ministry. The ministry would soon start the process of empaneling the insurance companies and hospitals for the scheme.

The mega health insurance scheme was announced by the PM on 15 August 2016 and will soon see the light of the day.
