Free bus pass scheme for school and college students for the year 2016-17 has been launched by the state government. During the launch of the scheme, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa gave away smart cards to five beneficiaries.
Free bus pass scheme of the state government is aimed at benefiting the students from poor background. The scheme has benefited 28.05 lakh students in 2015-16 according to the official release.
In the year 2016-17 the scheme will benefit 31.11 lakh students in schools and colleges across the state. Each student will be issued a smart card bus pass under the scheme. The total cost for the scheme implementation in 2016-17 is estimated at about Rs. 504.31 crore.
The launch of the scheme was marked by Jayalalithaa giving away smart card bus passes to 5 students. CM also launched a pension scheme for beneficiaries of her RK Nagar constituency.
